1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die: 45. Solomon Burke – Rock ‘N’ Soul (1964)
I’d not heard of Solomon Burke before, and looking him up he’s pretty much the forgotten man of Soul. That he’s also a preacher certainly informs the music when you think about it. What we get is pretty much pure soul, and despite having had James Brown earlier in the list this really feels like where soul comes into its own as a genre (presumably why Dimery included it). And presumably it got called “soul” because the gospel influences are clear when you look for them.
I don’t have too much to say about this one. It’s soul, which when done well (which it is here) is good to listen to, but nothing really jumped out at me to make me regret never having heard it before.
