1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die: 48. The Beach Boys – The Beach Boys Today! (1965)

The tracks Help Me Rhonda, When I Grow Up (To Be A Man) and Do You Wanna Dance? Are the best known off this album, I’d say. Looking up the details, this was a later (the eighth) studio album for the Beach Boys, I was expecting maybe their debut. And so this is why they are moving away from songs about surfing. It still sounds pretty much quintessential Beach Boys, though, with those high backing harmonies and jangly guitar. There are a lot of songs about love and heartbreak, as perhaps expected, although the song Don’t Hurt My Little Sister is an interesting one, told from a perspective not often seen in teen songs, of an older brother who is just on the weirder side of over-protective.

I don’t have much more on this one, sadly. It’s the Beach Boys, you get what you expect (minus the cars and surfing).
