I’m glad I got rid of using album titles as tags, because this is another one that could potentially have caused me issues. Or increased my traffic.
Musically, The Cure are going for the Joy
Division / Banshees sound of heavy drums (including the currently popular Burundi-style drums on
The Hanging Garden) with sinister wandering guitar or, in the case of Cold,
some dark and brooding organ.
“Dark and brooding” or “deep and sinister”
pretty much sums up the sound of this album, created when Smith was heading
into depression and the band were falling apart in all sorts of ways. There are
hints of the future Cure of Disintegration on Siamese Twins, whose slow and steady,
ominous beat feels a lot like Disintegration's Lullaby, while the title track emerges out of
backwards tracking and vocal noise.
The lyrics come from the Goth Fridge Magnet
Poetry school again. Take, for example, from Hanging Garden “Creatures kissing in the
rain / Shapeless in the dark again” and “Fall, fall, fall, fall out of the sky
/ Cover my face as the animals cry”, all relentless dark imagery that may not
actually mean much but poetically match the music beautifully and evoke a
wonderfully sense of despair and dread.
It may not be their best, but if you know
my tastes by now you’ll know I like a bit of darkness to my music, so I enjoyed
this one.
