1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die: 472. Motörhead – Ace Of Spades (1980)

Sad to think that the central three members of this band – Ian “Lemmy” Kilminster (bass, vocals), Phil “Philthy Animal” Taylor (drums) and “Fast” Eddie Clarke (guitar) are all no longer with us.

I’ve described some hard rock/heavy metal tracks as being like the soundtrack to driving an open-top sports car along the California Highway, but Motörhead are a filthier beast than that. They’re more the soundtrack to riding a motorbike through the desert. And not a nice Japanese bike with aerodynamic cowling. A dirty chopped hog with an ape-hanger handlebars, where the engine is a horribly unreliable oil-guzzling monster that once you get it going will rip the top off the road. We’re Dennis Hopper in Easy Rider, cruising for trouble.

This is one of those albums where there is the Big Hit (Ace Of Spades), and the rest of the tracks sound quite similar to, but not quite as good as, the Big Hit. That’s not entirely fair – The Chase Is Better Than The Catch is a good bit of Southern Rock-adjacent growling, while We Are The Road Crew is a thundering bit of classic rock. With Lemmy’s shout-singing and the psycho-fast beats, Motörhead take rock a step closer in the thrash metal direction, even if they preferred to refer to themselves as “just a rock and roll band”.
