1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die: 414. Funkadelic – One Nation Under A Groove (1978)

All of the things that we’d expect from George Clinton are here – crazy run on titles (Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers)), a bit of scatological humour (same track), a mix of funk and other genresnotably rock on Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?! And the bonus track Lunchmeataphobia (Think! It Ain't Illegal Yet!).

These are probably less experimental compared to Maggot Brain, instead being superb lengthy funk jams. Some tracks are pretty much straight up – Into You is a piece of sensitive slow soul, surprising amid the rest of the tracks. It’s a bit more guitar solo based than before as well, again giving it a kind of rock/funk crossover feel.

Listening to the title track feels very familiar – not only has it been sampled loads of times, I’m sure that the melody of the chorus has been used by somebody; not sure who. The lyric “Ready or not, here we come” has definitely been “borrowed” by the Fugees, since again the melody is similar.

And... that's about all I have to say for this one. Enjoy a short entry for a change.
